Best Management Practices (BMP5) - For Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea

BMP5 is a publication kept on board ,in vessel's library and its a  mandatory publication to carry when vessel is passing through piracy area in Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea

 Purpose of Best Management Practices : 

1- To Deter( STOP / DELAY ) Piracy and Enhance Maritime Security in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Arabian 

2- To help ship's master & crew to  plan their voyage and to detect, avoid, deter, delay and report piracy attacks. 

Area covered under BMP5 :  

1- Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea


 Highlight about BMP5: 

1- Past Experience has shown that  recommendations in this publication ( BMP5) makes a significant difference to the safety of seafarers while passing through the piracy areas.

2- Piracy-specific Best Management Practice (BMP5), international navies and capacity building ashore have helped to suppress piracy.

3- Best Management Practices in BMP5  mitigates ( reduce ) the risk from piracy and other maritime security threats to a vessel and its crew.

4- BMP5 piracy measures are effective, but differences in attack methods from other threats may require other forms of mitigation -In short we need to apply a good seamanship and need to follow all local, international and companies rules and regulation .

5- BMP5 complements piracy guidance in the latest International Maritime Organization (IMO) MSC Circulars (see www.imo.org) and advice on the Maritime Security Transit Corridor.

6- www.maritimeglobalsecurity.org which provides free security related guidance, together with access to best practice guides, including BMP5.

7- The website brings together several types of security risks to ships including piracy, cyber, migration, stowaways, smuggling and armed conflicts and war.
