STRUCTURE OF INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANIZATION { IMO}
IMO Consist of the following :
1: Assembly
- Consist of all member states.
- Meeting in every two year OR during any extraordinary session.
- Assembly is responsible for approving the work programme , budget & elects the council.
2: Council
- Elected by assembly for every two year.
- Between session of assembly ,council perform all the function of assembly.
- Function of Council :
A-Coordinate all activities of the organs of the organization.
B- In every two year council present the work programme and budget to assembly.
C- Receive all reports and proposal from committee and other organs and submit them to
assembly with comments and recommendations.
D- Appoint the secretary general which is subject to the approval of the assembly.
E- Enter in to agreements or arrangements with other organization which is subject to
assembly approval.
- Structure of council:
CATEGORY 'A' - Consist of 10 member states those are having largest interest in
providing international shipping services.
CATEGORY 'B' - Consist of 10 member states those are having largest interest in
international seaborne trade.
CATEGORY 'C' - Consist of 20 member states those who are not selected in category A
&B, & those have special interests in maritime transport or
navigation and all 20 member will cover all major geographic area of the
world. For ex: Singapore if not selected in cat A &B.
3: Committee
Total 5 committee supporting to council , which are as follow.
- { MSC } Maritime safety committee.
- { MEPC} Marine Environment Protection Committee.
- Legal committee.
- Technical cooperation committee.
- Facilitation committee.
4:Sub-Committee
MSC & MEPC are supported by number of sub-committee, which are as follows.
- { HTW }Human element, Training and watchkeeping.
- { III } Implementation of IMO Instruments.
- { NCSR } Navigation, communications & search and rescue.
- { PPR} Pollution prevention and response.
- { SDC } Ship Design & Construction.
- { SSE } Ship System and Equipment.
- { CCC } Carriage of cargo and containers.
