PREPARATION FOR SAFETY RADIO SURVEY ON BOARD A VESSEL
Qus 1: why safety radio survey is required.
- It is required by SOLAS Chapter 1 regulation 9 – Surveys of Radio Installations of Cargo
Ships.
- The details of requirements for equipment is contained in SOLAS Chapter IV–
Radiocommunications.
Qus 2: Which ships requires safety radio survey.
- Cargo ships of 300 gross and above.
Qus 3 : What information does safety radio certificate contain.
- Name of ship
- Distinctive number or letters
- Port of registry
- Gross tonnage
- Sea areas in which ship is certified to operate (regulation IV/2)
- IMO Number
- Date on which keel was laid or ship was at a similar stage of construction or, where applicable,
date on which work for a conversion or an alteration or modification of a major character was
commenced
- Completion date of the survey on which this certificate is based
Qus 4: What form should be attached with safety radio cert.
- A Record of Equipment for the Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificate (Form R)
Qus 5 : What does radio safety certificate / survey certifies.
- That the ship has been surveyed in accordance with the requirements of regulation I/9 of the
Convention.
- That the survey showed that:The ship complied with the requirements of the Convention as regards
radio installations
- The functioning of the radio installations used in life-saving appliances complied with the
requirements of the Convention.That an Exemption Certificate has/has not been issued.
Qus 6:What Surveys are required.
- An initial survey before the ship is put in service;
- A renewal survey at intervals specified by the Administration but not exceeding five years
- A periodical survey within three months before or after each anniversary date of the Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificate
Refer to Form-R, attached with the certificate safety radio It contains the survey items.
Following items to be checked and must be in good operational condition:
1. VHF radio telephony
2. VHF DSC
3.
MF/HF radio telephony, NBDP ( if fitted )
4. MF/HF DSC
5. INMARSAT
6. NAVTEX receiver
7. EGC receiver
8. EPIRB, battery expiry date
9. SART, battery expiry date
10. Two way VHF radio telephony apparatus
11. Main and Emergency sources of power
12. Battery, battery charging system
13. General operator’s certificate
14. GMDSS log book
15. Condition of all antenna and stencil on monkey island
16. Operational LRIT
Any other item mentioned in Form -R should be attended as required.
